Infertility Counseling: Choosing the right Counselor

Choosing the right person when it comes to infertility counseling can be quite a tricky task. Once you have made that choice and are comfortable with them you may be quite amazed at how much you will actually learn from your counselor. There are a few things that you will need to consider before you settle on any therapist. If you are covered by an insurance company you may find that they will insist that the counselor has attained certain degrees.

Be sure that the person is fully licensed and experienced. There is no one that is better qualified to help you through your infertility problems than engaging someone who is an expert in that field. After making sure that this person is certified to practice in your State find out if they hold a degree in mental health preferably in psychology. A counselor that has a vast experience in this field will be better placed to understand you because of their many years dealing with people that are going through the same kind of issues that you are having.

Your own GP should be able to point you in the right direction when it comes to seeking infertility counseling. Because doctors and health care workers all work together as a team it is more than likely that someone in your local practice would be in a good position to let you know of a good counselor that can help you. Doctors nearly always have someone that they can recommend because you will not be the first case that they have ever dealt with and have more than likely referred other couples.

This may sound a little strange; when considering infertility counseling most counselors will offer a free consultation at the beginning, this is the ideal opportunity for you to conduct your own interview. Before making your final decision on a therapist you should feel comfortable enough to ask him/her some very tactfully put vital questions like; how much experience they have, how long have they been in practice and so on. This also opens up the opportunity for you to get to know the person a little better. It is important that you feel comfortable enough not to put up any kinds of barriers with the counselor and that they are always willing and able to listen to your concerns.

Any problems one has to face in life especially when it comes to something like infertility counseling can be quite a challenge. But as long as you can make the right choice of counselor, someone that is there for you and can understand and support you emotionally educate you with enough knowledge that any decisions you should ultimately make are well informed ones.
